Introduction
Later in life my obsession with science made way for a broader focus on other activities, including the visual arts and music. More generally, my curiosity grew about our original sensory capabilities before literacy and materialism focussed us onto ‘objective observations’. What started as a hobby in my 40’s and 50’s was later taken seriously through a study of what is called variously, qi, prana, orgone, and other terms describing ‘natural energy fields’. This brought me closer to the fringes of science through the activities of the likes of James Lovelock and my membership of the Society for Scientific Investigation. Nowadays there’s a revival of interest ongoing on paranormal activities and so-called ‘subtle energy fields’. This became physically evident for me after my education into Pranic Healing practices, dowsing, and the practical teachings of that great sifu or energy master, Howard Lee: famed for the cure he effected on the famous author Carlos Castaneda. The teachings of Howard, and by Ken Eagle Feather on the so-called ‘Toltec Path’ suggested that their teacher, Don Juan was not a fictional character. He reflected the existence of an ancient body of arcane knowledge usually referred to as shamanism. It is evident from historical research that this body of knowledge was driven underground in Europe, first by Julius Caesar in his slaughter of the Druids, and later by the Inquisition , but some top scientists are now defying the norm by revealing the role of chi energy in physical reactions. The collaborative work between skilled meditators and top scientists such as William Tiller, showed that the discredited conclusions of Wilhelm Reich on orgone deserve to be revisited. The presence of many extra-terrestrial visitors (ETs) in our skies is also becoming common knowledge, after a period following the Second World War when public discussion of UFO phenomena was actively prohibited in many countries. On all these subjects, if you should you be interested in seeing something written, painted, or thought about by John Caddy, go to:
The contents of this cloud site have been extended to include all my interests; scientific, artistic, and in what may be called ‘Natural Philosophy’. The reason being that the investigation of ‘scientific anomalies’ assumes a higher importance as we prepare for closer contacts with the so-called ET’s.
My dowsing paper
Scepticism will prevail among those with a scientific background when faced with the results of a dowsing experiment in one of mankind’s oldest skills. Equally ancient attitudes to valid descriptions of reality also exist in the scientific literature, where the current paper would be rejected out of hand. Strangely enough, some scientists feel that a major revelation is waiting them shortly that will make sense of quantum physics, cosmology, and entangled particles, to mention a few of the current anomalies in the Theory of Everything they hope will be cleared up in the near future. At the same time, there are a number of recent solid discoveries that make time and distance illusory quantities if approached in the right way, such as Distant Viewing(see Courtney Brown). This new skill resembles dowsing but extends its capabilities to being able to grasp events visually and with our other senses, and also by making use of mental capabilities not fully explained. The recent book by Russel Targ makes it clear that the main obstacle to using a new paranormal phenomenon is our own logical mind. Since there is, as yet, no scientific explanation for this technique, it must necessarily be impossible or fraudulent. My own subconscious fears this sceptical view of consciousness, since the more powerful conscious mind supresses its intuitive thought processes and all capabilities associated with them. Russel Targ, an eminent scientist, when explaining the procedure to be followed to extract information from distant viewing, cautions that we should suppress that modern addition to our cognitive faculties, the forebrain, and its tendency for premature analysis while the subconscious is still obtaining the basic data. This advice also applies firmly to dowsing, where after the question is asked, the rotation of the wand by the hands is set in motion without curiosity or any conscious thought process other than counting.
In dowsing, you ask a question which is implicitly assumed to be answerable, even if the information requested should not be available according to rational criteria, and the subconscious uses a capability of our autonomous nervous system in manipulating the dowsing tool to answer it. Where the answer comes from, either from a long-buried memory, a cosmic information source, or by mental communication with an off-planet telepathic ‘expert’, I will discuss later. Clearly we are dealing with a capability of our nervous system that neurologists should be ready to admit, is currently unknown. The key to dowsing then, is that a question is put forward in the mind, and the answer requested, in the form of a quantified response measured by the number of rotations of the plastic wand. An earlier, more extensive investigation of the energy of our vocabulary revealed interesting and unexpected conclusions (Caddy 2011) and could be mentioned here.
Fig 1: An image illustrating the supposed mechanism of hand dowsing. The expanding personal aura of the body accompanies a positive thought or a mental image of quantity or size, and is detected by the hand spacing.
I will also mention here another little-known method of dowsing: the common reaction many people have in spacing apart their hands to illustrate a quantity (Fig 1). The hands are first held closely facing each other, and then appear to spring apart in reaction to the size or quantity of some incoming information they wish to express. I mention this hand spacing as an alternative way of expressing the size of a phenomenon being visualized, since we all have it as an automatic reaction:(in the classical example illustrating the size of the big fish we caught last Saturday!).That this is a psychic ‘equipment-free’ measure of dowsing, is revealed in the discipline of pranic healing, where this hand-spacing instinct is used for example, to measure the energy of a patient’s chakra. In fact the basis for the method is that our personal aura is denser around the active chakras in our palms, and the extension of our very dynamic aura reflects from one second to the next, the stimuli coming from our mental reflections. This is undoubtedly an ancient gesture once used by our distant ancestors for communicating the size or energy of a phenomenon.
Is there a cosmic data source?
The concept of a cosmic source of information available to living organisms has a variety of supporters, and has been used to account for unexpected revelations by physicists such as Nikola Tesla, whose discoveries of new uses of electricity in technology do not owe a great deal to his predecessors. In a fit of originality the physicist David Bohm developed a theory of cosmic information driving Universal change – the Implicate Order. Certainly those interested in ideas such as the Akashic Records- the original Cosmic Library, have a large literature to review that I can’t summarise adequately here, except to say that the most consistent confirmation comes from seeking the data in the real world, not from searching the literature.
The theory of dowsing or divination
Although the paper of mine I am reviewing may be more accurately called divination, given that the subjects addressed were not underfoot or in proximity as is often the case with dowsing. Nonetheless, for both dowsing and divination, the consensus seems to be that the information sought is not located by the dowsing rod or pendulum, but this equipment is used by the subconscious to communicate with the conscious mind via the autonomic system which controls the equipment. The information it uncovers comes from deep in the memory or from what are commonly referred to as paranormal sources.
My preferred model for this procedure, and one which helps me in visualization, is to follow the information provided by Max Freedom Long (1948) which he claimed follows from the practice of Huna shamans in ancient Hawaii. The concept, as spelled out in Caddy (2013), can be expressed in the following cartoon and the diagram below (Fig 2). The basic Huna idea Long proposed is that there are three mental centres or minds associated with each of us: the subconscious, which consists of some 80% of the brain’s nerve cells and has access to distant memories and unconventional ‘6th senses’. This leaves the usually dominant conscious mind housed in the frontal lobes, with less than 20% or so of our cerebral neural equipment to work with. A key fact that cannot be ignored, is that all paranormal skills require this bossy information questioning and information-seeking conscious brain to be silent, hence actively excluded from participation. A third centre, that may not be intimately linked to the physical brain, is able to access information sources through time and space beyond the capability of other mental and physical centres in the brain. This super conscious mind or ‘guardian angel’ can communicate its discoveries to the subconscious, but not directly to the conscious mind. That the dowsing or divination process invites the activation of this centre is the underlying concept here, which was spelled out in ancient times by 7 Huna principles, which are:
• IKE - The world is what you think it is.
• KALA - There are no limits, everything is possible.
• MAKIA - Energy flows where attention goes.
• MANAWA - Now is the moment of power.
• ALOHA - To love is to be happy with.
• MANA - All power comes from within.
• PONO - Effectiveness is the measure of truth.
• Fig 2; A cartoon illustrating the Huna vision of Freedom Long (1948) that the mind exists as three largely independent entities. The subconscious (lower face) stores past inputs from the senses and our environment. The superconscious (a male-female entity or guardian angel), has access to cosmic information sources. It may pass information to the subconscious, but not directly into consciousness (Caddy 2013).
Evidently, this approach is based on doing, not theorizing – and requires complete faith in our personal power, and in the accessibility of cosmic information.
Fig. 3: A question from the conscious mind asks for a reading on the phenomenon being dowsed. The subconscious locates this information in its memory (2) or seeks inputs from the superconscious mind. (3) the conscious mind avoids thinking about the subject being dowsed, and switches to counting(4),the subconscious blocks further rotations when the correct number has been reached.
The concept of Prana
• An ancient literature in many ancient global traditions preceding the origins of science, talk about prana, chi, mana and their modern equivalents, such as orgone: a prana equivalent of bio-energy that Wilhelm Reich believed could remove the effects of traumatic experiences in blocking the natural flow of life-energy in the body. Wilhelm Reich unsuccessfully attempted to integrate this concept into the scientific literature, and ended up in jail for his efforts. Nonetheless, a wide range of these identical forms of ‘soft energy’ with a wide range of names reflecting their use in ancient cultures world-wide, are detectable by humans, either in living organisms where they are always present, or in the inorganic environment around us. Obviously there is a need to integrate traditional knowledge systems with science, but although this human bio-energy capability is very old, it also exists in surprisingly new forms. Its procedures suppose a number of concepts at variance with science, hence the practice has arisen of storing these discoveries in a separate category – often referred to (unjustly) as ‘pseudo-science’.
Reasons for considering the results of this operation as of potential utility
As an author, I obviously feel that the results presented in this paper have a certain validity, and as I have been explaining, my reasons stem in part from my willingness to believe that time and space contain flexible forms of information, and that information itself is the basis the universe is constructed upon, and that it is stored somewhere (everywhere?) in accessible form. One might ask for example, how knowing that ‘Europa’ is a moon in the Solar System, and by invoking its name, I am able to access an estimate of its pranic energy relative to other bodies in the solar system? Obviously I cannot answer this question in a manner that will satisfy a materialist scientific thinker, but I think an examination of the results presented in my paper reveals a number of conclusions that often correspond closely to scientifically-established realities.
For example:
- Small moons circulating closest to large planets have the highest readings for prana. The scientific reason for this is two-fold:
- Strong tidal deformations of these moons rotating closest to their gigantic companion, are generated by strong gravitational forces, friction, and hence high pranic energy. This in turn often leads to volcanic activity;
- These geological characteristics generating frictional energy and heat, in the case of moons with ice under the frozen surface led to high prana, frictional heat, and oceans formed beneath the surface whose dynamism is associated with high prana levels.
- The outer layers of the giant planets further out in the solar system are essentially mainly formed from gigantic masses of gaseous or liquid substances, in rapid movement with turbulent flow. This explains their high pranic readings, and larger bodies generally have higher prana readings. The obvious exception is the Sun, which has a generally low reading for prana. As mentioned by experts on prana and qi, a high level of solar energy generated by a body inhibits in some way the production of subtle energy.
- Small, rocky planets (Mercury, Venus, the Earth, and Mars) have a relatively limited component of dynamic liquids in their composition and receive significant levels of solar radiation which explains in part their modest pranic reading. It was nonetheless surprising to me that the last three planets showed quite similar levels of prana.
- That the Earth did not generate a higher reading given the abundance of life forms on it, was also surprising. I can only suppose that from a quantitative perspective, that the relative volume of living biomass to total planetary biomass is small? Further more specific investigations of living organisms on these bodies may follow.
A final thought
Obviously the dowsing procedure shares similarities with how great scientists were able to identify key new assumptions and add them to their list of partially-outdated axioms by so doing. If these new concepts were not preceded by a logical research path, (and some of them were not, since the path to enlightenment was often reconstructed after the key concept appeared instantaneously in their mind). One might suppose that if we on Earth share such a cosmic library with the many intelligent species that evolved us in the cosmos, could it be that our leading minds were copying their discoveries from a cosmic data source?
